Prof. Guan received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Yale University and subsequently completed postdoctoral training in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the faculty at Penn State University, where he held appointments in both Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering before moving to Indiana University Bloomington, where he is a Full Professor in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering. Prof. Guan’s research focuses on the interdisciplinary areas of Molecular Point-of-Care Testing, Nanopore Technology, Embedded Systems, Edge Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. His group develops biomedical sensors, devices, and systems, as well as novel sensing principles to advance molecular diagnostics and testing. His work aims to deliver Accessible, Affordable, Accurate, and Actionable diagnosis wherever and whenever needed. Prof. Guan is actively engaged with the scientific community. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and an active member of BMES, SPIE, the Biophysical Society, and AAAS. A frequent reviewer for more than 40 high-impact journals and federal funding agencies such as NSF and NIH. Prof. Guan’s research has been recognized through numerous prestigious honors, including the HHMI International Research Fellowship and the NSF CAREER Award.

Asad Khalid is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Guan Lab at Indiana University Bloomington. He joined the lab in Spring 2023 and is currently working on developing ultrafast Plasmonic PCR technology for multiplexed detection of respiratory infections at point-of-care. His research interests include point-of-care molecular diagnostics, nanopore single-molecule analysis, and sensor-integrated microfluidic organs-on-chips.

Bingyuan Guo is a postdoctoral researcher in the Guan Lab at Department of Intelligent Systems, Indiana University Bloomington. He joined the lab in 2025 and is currently working on development of POCT platform for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. His research interests include point-of-care diagnostics, protein identification, mass transport through nanopore. Prior to joining the Guan Lab, he was research director of Guangzhou PoreSpect Ltd. and earned his Ph.D. in bioinorganic chemistry from Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinses Academy of Sciences in 2018.

Md. Ahasan Ahamed is a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at Penn State and a visiting scholar in the Guan Lab at Indiana University Bloomington, which he joined in Fall 2022. He develops isothermal assays integrated with solid-state nanopore sensors for point-of-care diagnostics. His interests include single molecule biophysics, molecular assay design, micro-nano fluidics, and point-of-care device fabrication; he holds an MS in Mechanical and Production Engineering from Konkuk University (2022) and a BSc from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (2014), and served as an assistant professor at BUTEX from 2014 to 2020.

Ujwal Jibhkate is a Graduate Research Assistant in the Guan Lab and a Master of Science in Data Science student at Indiana University, Bloomington. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is currently working on developing foundation model applications for HIV RNA sequencing, with a specific focus on identifying Drug Resistance Mutations. His research interests include applied AI in genomics, bioinformatics, and end-to-end MLOps for scientific research. Prior to joining the Guan Lab, he worked for two years as a Software Engineer at IBM and earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering with minor in Computer Science from Ramdeobaba University, India.

Lakshmi Bhanu Aravind Nidamarty is a Graduate Research Assistant in the Guan Lab at Indiana University Bloomington. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is currently working on AI Enhanced Nanopore Sequencing project . His research interests include computational biology, machine learning for bioinformatics, and LLMs for healthcare. Prior to joining the Guan Lab, he earned a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from SASTRA University and worked as a Data Analyst for over a year from 2023 to 2024.

Xue Xiao is a research assistant in the Guan Lab at Indiana University - Bloomington. She joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is currently developing AI-driven pipelines for real-time HIV drug resistance prediction using Nanopore sequencing and Stanford HIVDB data. Her research interests include AI-driven genomics and computational modeling.

Aditya Dhumal is a Research Assistant in the Computer Science Department at Indiana University Bloomington and a Master of Science in Computer Science student. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is currently working on nanopore sequencing automation and genomic large language models, focusing on building real-time bioinformatics pipelines and AI-driven genomic analysis systems. His research interests include genomic LLMs, edge computing for bioinformatics, and intelligent automation in scientific workflows. In addition to his academic research, he also works as an AI/ML Engineer at Blackwood Solutions, developing edge AI systems and computer vision pipelines for real-world deployment. Prior to joining Indiana University, he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science from Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2024.

Angelo Gonzalez is an informatics major currently working on an AI-Based Prediction of HIV Drug Resistance in the Guan Lab at Indiana University Bloomington. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is currently working on parsing the HIVDB XML, unifying a dataset, and training and evaluating a baseline model. His research interests include mutations and nanopore sensing.

Jack Wember is an Undergrad Researcher in the Guan Lab at Indiana University Bloomington who is studying Computer Science with a specialization in Software Engineering. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is working on hardware implementation of sequencing using Nvidia Jetson Orin Developer kits, while also helping develop portable nanopore sequencing platforms for point-of-need diagnostics. His research interests include embedded systems for biomedical applications, GPU-accelerated bioinformatics, and portable diagnostic technologies.
